If you are a Student or a beginner in open source software development and 18+ years old, we hope you will apply. The application period opened March 18th at 18:00 UTC and closes April 2nd at 18:00 UTC. This year we are celebrating the 20th year of Google Summer of Code!
GSoC is a significant time commitment, don't expect an hour or two a day in an internet cafe to be enough! Depending on the project, the skills necessary will range from beginner to expert, but you do need some experience.
Each GSoC Contributor who has received a passing Final Phase Evaluation and who has submitted the Final Phase Evaluation of their Mentor on time may receive a stipend after the Final Phase Evaluation deadline.
GSoC can also help beginner contributors learn the ins and outs of open source while being mentored by experienced community members. GSoC is for students and beginner contributors to open source development, it is not for experienced contributors to open source.

You won't get rich participating in GSoC as a Contributor, but the money can certainly help while you are building your skills and doing meaningful contributions. Being a successful GSoC student is in fact a prestigious achievement. It's another way to make your resume more impressive.
However, before trying to contribute to open source, you have to learn a few elementary skills. E.g., git, GitHub, a programming language (not necessary for everyone, but essential for GSoC aspirants), basic knowledge of IRC(Internet Relay Chat), Basic knowledge of Bug tracking tools.
But now, Google has laid off the staff who organized these long-running competitions. I asked Googlers the reason why these events have been canceled and one thing became clear: most of the program managers who worked on the coding competitions were recently let go in Google's historic job cuts.
Candidates must be:
18 years or older on date they register for program. Not be a resident of an United States embargoed country. Eligible to work in the country in which they reside for the duration of the program. New or beginner contributors to open source software development.
