By Train and Ferry
Travelers can take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani Railway Station, which takes around 8-12 hours, depending on the train type and schedule. From Surat Thani, buses or taxis are available to take passengers to Donsak Pier, where ferries depart for Koh Samui.
Many travellers prefer to pre-book their ferry tickets. However, it's really not necessary and you may be charged more. You can book tickets a day before through your hotel or pop into one of the many travel and transport agencies throughout Thailand to purchase your ferry tickets.
Having only 48 hours in Koh Samui is quite a common scenario for many travelers. Measuring 25 km long and 21 km across, it's easy to drive around Samui island in just a few hours. However, the place is packed with stunning beaches, fascinating attractions, breath-taking views, great restaurants and much more.
Koh Samui certainly has more of an island feel about it compared to Phuket. It's smaller, less developed, not as crowded, and it has one main ring road and not much else. Phuket's tangle of roads can get clogged with traffic, particularly in and around the congested Old Town precinct in the east.
The Lomprayah high-speed catamaran is the fastest ferry to/from Koh Samui. You can island hop by ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan, then to Koh Tao and then onto Chumporn on the mainland.
How many days do you need on Koh Samui? Personally, I would recommend having at least 5 days on Koh Samui. This will give you time to explore the different areas of the island, and get a day trip in too. Koh Samui is a large island and anything less than 5 days would feel rushed.
There are many ways to travel from Bangkok to Koh Samui. The best but most expensive option is to take a flight. Alternatively, you can enjoy the scenic journey by bus or train, followed by a ferry ride. It's a comfortable and most traveled option, and you get to enjoy the scenic way and sea journey.
