What is Ewing sarcoma? Ewing sarcoma is cancer that occurs primarily in the bone or soft tissue. While Ewing sarcoma can develop in any bone, it is most often found in the hip bones, ribs, or long bones (e.g., femur (thighbone), tibia (shinbone) or humerus (upper arm bone)).
Long-term Outcomes for Children with Ewing Sarcoma
For children with metastatic disease, the five-year survival rate is 20 to 30 percent. Children with Ewing sarcoma that comes back after initial treatment (called "relapsed" or "recurrent" disease) have a poor prognosis.
Ewing sarcoma is a rare type of bone or soft tissue cancer that primarily affects children. With treatment, doctors can often cure the disease. A person's survival rate is also much higher if the tumor has not spread beyond where it started.
The annual incidence of Ewing sarcoma (ES) in the United States is 2.93 per million children (2). Since 1970, the survival of patients with ES has increased substantially. Presently, the 5-year overall survival rate for localized ES is about 75% (3).
They represent just 1 percent of pediatric cancers, with about 200 children and teens in the U.S. receiving a diagnosis each year. While treatable, Ewing sarcomas are often aggressive, damaging bone and potentially metastasizing (spreading), usually to the lungs or other bones.
The symptoms of Ewing sarcoma will depend on the size of the cancer and where it is in the body. The main symptoms are pain in the affected area that gets progressively worse, and swelling and tenderness. Other possible, but less common, symptoms may include a high temperature (fever), severe tiredness and weight loss.
A sarcoma is considered stage IV when it has spread to distant parts of the body. Stage IV sarcomas are rarely curable. But some patients may be cured if the main (primary) tumor and all of the areas of cancer spread (metastases) can be removed by surgery. The best success rate is when it has spread only to the lungs.
Stage 4 ES is the most advanced stage of the disease. It indicates the cancer has spread to distant body organs and tissues. Symptoms may include bone pain, fractures, fever, and weight loss. The treatment options for stage 4 ES may include chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy.
Bone cancer is one of the most painful cancers. Factors that drive bone cancer pain evolve and change with disease progression, according to Patrick Mantyh, PhD, symposium speaker and professor of pharmacology, University of Arizona.
Osteosarcoma, the most common malignant bone tumor, [1, 2] is a deadly form of musculoskeletal cancer that most commonly causes patients to die of pulmonary metastatic disease (see the image below).
