Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, or ERCP, is a procedure to diagnose and treat problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas. It combines X-ray and the use of an endoscope—a long, flexible, lighted tube.
The dye enters the ducts through a small hollow tube (catheter) passed through the endoscope. If bile duct blockage caused by gallstones is detected, a variety of balloons and baskets attached to the catheters can be passed into the ducts allowing stone removal.
We can do an ERCP to treat conditions that affect the bile ducts, small intestine and pancreas. It is a less-invasive procedure than surgery. Bile ducts: During an ERCP, we can put small plastic or metal tubes called stents into the bile ducts if they are blocked.
You might have discomfort when swallowing for at least 48 hours after an ERCP. This discomfort can last for several weeks, but it gets better. If you have any bloating or tummy discomfort, this might be from the air that we put into your stomach during the procedure. This is normal and should settle within 24 hours.
During an ERCP, we put a flexible tube with a camera on the end, called an endoscope, into your mouth. We then pass this tube down your food pipe (oesophagus). The tube goes into your stomach and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum). The procedure takes between 15 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes.
This procedure helps remove gallstones and stones from the bile ducts and adhesions. The success rate of ERCP is in the range of 95-99%.
However, ERCP has complications such as recurrence of CBDS, postoperative pancreatitis, bleeding and infection, among which the most common long-term complications are stone recurrence.
The mean duration of the patency of the stent is about 12 months. The biliary stenting is performed either with plastic or metal stents, studies recommending their replacement after 3-6 months. Patients with long stayed forgotten biliary stents are inevitably treated with surgical intervention.
The goal of treatment is to relieve the blockage. Stones may be removed using an endoscope during an ERCP. In some cases, surgery is required to bypass the blockage. The gallbladder will usually be surgically removed if the blockage is caused by gallstones.
Do not drive, operate heavy machinery, or drink alcohol for 24 hours after your procedure. You should go home and rest after your procedure. We recommend that you eat something light since you have not eaten for over 8 hours. Avoid fried foods, fatty foods and large quantities of food.
