A person can live with dextrocardia for a long time, but the outlook varies based on other diagnoses. Babies born with isolated dextrocardia (no defects or syndromes) have a normal life expectancy. But babies born with heart defects or genetic syndromes may need treatments or surgeries to manage those conditions.
Almost half of all cases of PCD have situs inversus totalis. Complications from PCD include bronchiectasis, recurrent pneumonias, recurrent otitis media and bronchitis. Worth noting, situs inversus totalis is commonly associated with a structurally normal heart in 90%–95% of cases.
Visceral heterotaxy-9 (HTX9) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by randomization of organ laterality, resulting in defects such as situs inversus and dextrocardia. Affected males are infertile mainly due to defective sperm motility, whereas affected females do not appear to have fertility problems.
Dextrocardia occurs when your child is born with their heart on the right side of their chest instead of the left side of their chest. While dextrocardia itself doesn't cause any health problems, some children have related issues and other complex problems in their heart and other organs that need medical attention.
Dextrocardia Complications
Congestive heart failure. Infertility (in males with Kartagener syndrome) Intestinal blockages. Respiratory failure.
Dextrocardia is a rare congenital condition where the heart points toward the right side of the chest instead of the left. The condition is usually not life-threatening, although it often occurs alongside more serious complications, such as heart defects and organ disorders in the abdomen.
Notable individuals with documented cases of situs inversus include: Enrique Iglesias, a Spanish singer, songwriter, actor and record producer. Catherine O'Hara, Canadian-American actress, writer, and comedian. Randy Foye, an American basketball player in the NBA.
At the same time, several independent studies present evidence for a possible relation between situs inversus and the gross morphological asymmetry of the brain torque with potential differences between subtypes of situs inversus with ciliary and non-ciliary etiologies.
There are no symptoms of dextrocardia if the heart is normal. Conditions that may include dextrocardia may cause the following symptoms: Bluish skin (cyanosis) Difficulty breathing.
Dextrocardia that affects your heart function can cause a variety of symptoms. These include breathing difficulties, blue lips and skin, and fatigue. Children with dextrocardia may not grow or develop correctly, and thus may need heart surgery to correct a defect.
