In the vast majority of cases, your cat will feel fine and you won't notice any change in their behavior. Mild signs, such as tiredness, mild fever, and decreased appetite, may be present for a short time. Occasionally, some vaccines may produce a transitory small and soft nodule at the site of injection.
More serious (and less common) side effects include persistent vomiting and diarrhea, itchy and bumpy skin (“hives”), facial swelling, severe difficulty breathing, and collapse. These reactions can be life-threatening and are medical emergencies. Contact your veterinarian immediately if any of these signs develop.
Vaccines help your cat's immune system fight off infections and protect against life-threatening diseases. Even if a vaccinated cat does get sick, their symptoms are likely to be much milder and easier to manage.
It's common for pets to experience mild, short-lasting side effects after receiving a vaccine, usually starting within hours of the vaccination. You may notice one or more of these signs: Tenderness and swelling at the vaccination site. Tiredness.
Lethargy, a slight fever, and some mild discomfort are common side effects pets get from vaccines. This can be characterized by your pet not acting like their usual self. This is a normal reaction to vaccinations, and the symptoms should be mild and only last one or two days.
Veterinarians recommend that all indoor cats should be given core vaccinations to keep them protected from a large range of extremely contagious diseases, so they are safe from illnesses if they escape from your house, go for grooming, or have to stay at a boarding facility, etc.
Making sure your cat is comfortable and has all their needs nearby is the best thing you can do to help your cat. Most cats feel and behave completely normally after their vaccinations. Just be careful not to stroke them near where they had their injection, as it is often a bit tender for a few days.
Side effects to intranasal vaccines look similar to a cold and the symptoms can include a runny nose, coughing, and sneezing. Your cat or dog should be fully recovered in one or two days. If your kitty or pup doesn't get better after 48 hours has passed or their symptoms are becoming more severe call your vet.
Very few cats may be allergic to one or more components of the vaccine and have more serious side effects, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or difficulty breathing. If these signs occur, contact your veterinarian immediately.
