Overview. A boil is a painful, pus-filled bump that forms under your skin when bacteria infect and inflame one or more of your hair follicles. A carbuncle is a cluster of boils that form a connected area of infection under the skin. Boils (furuncles) usually start as reddish or purplish, tender bumps.
Boils are usually caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (staph infection). These painful skin abscesses result from bacteria infecting a hair follicle. They commonly occur on the face, neck, armpits, buttocks, and thighs, but can appear anywhere on your body.
Are Boils Contagious? Not exactly, but the germs that cause boils (staph) are easily spread through skin-to-skin contact and contaminated objects. These bacteria usually do no harm unless they find a break in the skin. To avoid spreading staph, don't share towels, bedding, clothes, or sports gear while you have a boil.
Boils may heal on their own after a period of itching and mild pain. More often, they become more painful as pus builds up. Boils usually need to open and drain in order to heal. This most often happens within 2 weeks.
A cyst is under the skin and is usually painless but can resemble a boil if it ruptures or becomes infected. Cysts and boils may be easily confused with each other. However, they differ in various ways, including cause and overall appearance. Boils are generally due to an infection.
Most boils are caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a type of bacterium commonly found on the skin and inside the nose. A bump forms as pus collects under the skin. Boils sometimes develop at sites where the skin has been broken by a small injury or an insect bite, which gives the bacteria easy entry.
Risk factors for boils
Poor hygiene – sweat and dead skin cells in natural creases and crevices, such as the armpit, provide a hospitable home for bacteria. Nutrition – inadequate nutrition may reduce a person's natural immunity. Broken skin – other skin conditions, such as eczema, can break the skin surface.
A number of STIs can cause skin lesions that you might identify as boils, for example, herpes and warts. Any new lumps and bumps that you find on your vulva should be checked out by your doctor, especially if you think there's any chance it could be an STI.
Other medical conditions or lifestyle factors that make people more likely to get boils include: iron deficiency anemia. diabetes. previous antibiotic therapy.
Avoid heavily spiced, fried foods, as well as sugary and refined foods. Avoid cashew nuts, pecan nuts, peanuts, eggs, cheese, pickles, processed meats and chocolates. Partake in a cleansing fast monthly to rid the body of accumulated toxins.
