Folliculitis is often caused when hair follicles are infected with bacteria, commonly Staphylococcus aureus (staph). It may also be caused by viruses, fungi, parasites, medications or physical injury. Sometimes the cause isn't known.
Folliculitis is usually caused by bacteria. It also can be caused by other things, such as an ingrown hair. You can also get folliculitis if you have damaged hair follicles. Shaving or wearing clothes that rub the skin can irritate the follicles.
Folliculitis and mild boils may go away with no treatment. Warm cloths (compresses) may help ease symptoms and speed healing. Your healthcare provider may also prescribe topical antibiotics to apply to your skin.
Staphylococcus aureus folliculitis: Infection of the hair follicle with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is one of the most common causes of folliculitis. Small red or white pus-filled pimples can be seen on the skin. The affected area often gets better (resolves) within a few days and can be cared for at home.
Scalp acne
Like any other kind of acne, they can be caused by bacteria, hormones, or clogged pores. Buildup from shampoo or hairspray can also cause scalp acne. These bumps can be painful, itchy, red, or inflamed. They may also bleed.
Hormonal Causes
Ovulation bleeding occurs during sudden fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone hormone levels during ovulation. This occurs because: Estrogen levels steadily increase before ovulation, along with the growth of the follicle that contains the maturing egg.
Essential Oils
Tea tree oil, neem oil, geranium oil, grapefruit seed oil are very effective in treating folliculitis. Tea tree oil can be added to your shampoo, lotion or body wash. Rub it gently onto the affected area and let it sit. Before using it do a patch test to make sure there are no adverse reactions.
Resist the temptation to squeeze or pop a folliculitis boil. While you might manage to express the pus and other infected fluid, you also run the risk of pushing those toxins more deeply into the skin, to the point that they may enter your bloodstream. Instead, let your dermatologist diagnose and treat the problem.
Severe vitamin A and C deficiency may cause folliculitis. [1] In vitamin A deficiency the skin shows follicular hyperkeratosis, dryness and generalised wrinkling. [11] It requires about 2 months of vitamin C deprivation to produce mucocutaneous signs, including perifollicular petechiae and follicular hyperkeratosis.
Hair follicles are structures within your skin that grow your hair. You're born with millions of hair follicles in your skin. You can't pull out hair follicles. Damaged hair follicles lead to hair loss or reduced hair growth.
