Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) happen when a group of blood vessels in your body forms incorrectly. In these malformations, arteries and veins are unusually tangled and form direct connections, bypassing normal tissues. This usually happens during development before birth or shortly after.
The greatest potential danger posed by AVMs is hemorrhage. Most episodes of bleeding remain undetected at the time they occur because they are not severe enough to cause significant damage. But massive, even fatal, bleeding episodes do occur.
An AVM can slightly decrease life expectancy. But, by and large, you can expect to return to a normal life and have a normal life expectancy if your AVM is cured by complete surgical removal. This is especially true for young people.
Surgical Treatment (also called Open Microvascular Neurosurgery) involves using a microscope. Specialized techniques are used to remove the AVM from the spinal cord or brain. The advantage is that the AVM is then considered cured.
Surgery to remove the AVM.
Surgery involves making a small cut near the AVM, sealing the surrounding arteries and veins so they don't bleed, then removing the AVM. A surgeon redirects blood flow to normal blood vessels. Surgery is a cure for this condition.
Fortunately, most patients living with an AVM can live long and full lives. Some individuals live with an AVM for life without it ever being detected. Cure rates after surgery are as high as 100% in patients with low-grade AVMs, and a combination of treatment options are available for more complex cases.
Treatment is typically focused on managing the VM to decrease the size and symptoms or to reduce or prevent problems that can be caused by the malformation. Although VMs cannot often be completely cured, there are many ways to manage them well. VM is benign, which means it is not cancer.
Avoiding strenuous exercise: People who are taking medications for their AVM may need to avoid strenuous exercise that could raise blood pressure. A doctor can advise on which exercises to avoid.
A cerebral vascular malformation (AVM) is a collection or tangle of blood vessels in the brain that can restrict or alter blood flow. Often, the condition is present at birth and can worsen over time. In some cases, patients will present with seizures, bleeding, headaches and other neurological symptoms.
If possible, a person with an AVM should avoid any activities that may excessively elevate blood pressure, such as heavy lifting or straining, and they should avoid blood thinners like warfarin. A person with an AVM should have regular checkups with his or her doctor.
