One way to control high blood pressure is to eat foods that are rich in potassium. Potassium binds to the sodium in your bloodstream, helping to flush it out of your system. Green grapes are packed with potassium and fiber, which can help lower high blood pressure by regulating your cardiovascular system.
In general, dark red and purple grapes are higher in antioxidants than green or white grapes. The antioxidants found in grapes can help protect your cells from free radicals, which are a natural byproduct of your body's biological processes.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), a 100-gram serving of red or green seedless grapes contains 18 grams of carbohydrates, 15.5 grams of sugar, and less than 1 gram of fiber. Black seedless grapes have about the same amount of carbs and fiber but a little bit more sugar (16.7 grams).
Those green grapes at the grocery store are probably Thompson Seedless. But their original name was Sultana. Though named after William Thompson, the first person to popularize this variety of grape in the U.S., they hail from Persia. The production of the antioxidant anthocyanin can protect your body against inflammation. A mutation in green grapes prevents the production of anthocyanin, though, which decreases the levels of antioxidants in green grapes, which is why red and purple grapes are often considered healthier.
