Commercial passenger planes usually cruise at about 35,000 feet. That's around 6.6 miles up in the sky. Some planes can reach up to 43,100 feet, which is their maximum safe altitude. How high a commercial plane flies at depends on the type of aircraft, how much it weighs, what air traffic control says, and the weather.
One could fly at 70,000 feet (about 20 km) the way the U-2 reconnaissance plane does, and land (even without changing the angle of attack) at 150 mph.
Commercial passenger jets fly at a cruise altitude of 35,000 feet or 10,670 meters or 6.3 miles. Commercial passenger planes can fly as high as 41,000 - 43,100 feet, this is called the aircraft's service ceiling.
Planes can fly at 50,000ft, although it depends on the aircraft. Remember the Concorde? It hit a record 60,000ft where other commercial jetliners never went. Military aircraft can also reach 50,000ft.
Aircraft altitude limitations depend on engine capability, aerodynamic design, and passenger safety. Supersonic jets, like the Concorde, fly at altitudes of 50,000 to 60,000 feet to reduce drag and noise pollution.
This is a baseline for the minimum oxygen a pilot needs to function. At 40,000 feet, the air pressure is about 5 inHg. That means that if the pilot is breathing pure oxygen at this altitude, that person is still only getting 4 to 5 inHg of oxygen. As noted, this is the limit for pilot performance.
This is just about enough to fly an airplane like the A-11 at 80,000 feet at Mach 3. At 100,000 feet at Mach 3 the required capture area goes well over 100 square feet. At 125,000 feet the inlets would become truly gigantic.
Cracking 100,000 feet would require flying at Mach 0.7 or Mach 0.8, and “giant amounts of thrust” would be required to push the aircraft through the transonic drag of those speeds, he says.
That said, planes generally fly at higher altitudes — usually between 30,000 to 42,000 feet — because the air gets thinner the higher you go. When the air is thinner, planes can fly faster and more efficiently, using less fuel to maintain the speed required to develop lift.
white was the first pilot to fly any aircraft faster than mach 4, 5 and 6, as well as the first to fly above 200,000 and 300,000 feet. he set the only official world record of the X-15 program when he flew to 314,750 feet on July 17, 1962, a fédération aéronautique internationale altitude record that still stands.
