Allergic shiners are dark, discolored circles under your eyes that may look like black eyes (bruises). They appear due to nasal congestion brought on by hay fever (allergic rhinitis). As your immune system responds to allergies, you may develop swelling in the moist inner lining of your nose (mucosal edema).
To treat allergic shiners, use approved antihistamines to control reactions to common allergens. In addition, practice hygiene such as frequent and thorough hand washing before touching food, after playing outdoors, and after petting animals to limit exposure to allergens.
Most people associate the word “shiner” with a black eye that occurs as the result of a fight or injury. These shiners are bruises caused by blood leaking into the tissues around the injured eye. Allergic shiners, however, are dark circles that appear under the eyes due to sinus blockage caused by allergies.
One study found that not chicken, just turkey meat is the primary cause of allergic reactions, whilst goose, pheasant, and duck meat cause milder reaction or no symptoms.
How long do allergic shiners last? It depends. With proper treatment to alleviate your allergies, allergic shiners usually go away within a few weeks. As your veins heal, the color of your allergic shiners may change from a darker color to a lighter color, including green, yellow or brown.
Apparently, deficiency in iron can be a culprit for those dark circles around your eyes; if it is accompanied by other symptoms, that is. When the body isn't getting enough iron, it hampers the production of haemoglobin which is in charge of carrying oxygen across the tissues.
Prescription-strength antihistamines, corticosteroids, and other allergy medications can help control the body's allergic reaction, thereby reducing the need to rub the nose. Prescription creams and ointments may also be used to treat the physical appearance of the crease.
A lower eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is an outpatient procedure where the surgeon readjusts the fat in the lower eye area and tightens the muscle and skin to create a smooth appearance. In most cases, a lower eyelid lift gets rid of under-eye bags for life — it's rare for people to need future touch-ups.
Aquagenic Urticaria (Water Allergy)
Aquagenic urticaria, or water allergy, is an extremely rare condition. It causes individuals to develop itchy and painful hives when their skin comes into contact with water.
Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger symptoms such as hives, swollen airways and digestive problems. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.
